How do I add an unrelated individual to my Ancestry tree?
Before we can list an unrelated person in Ancestry, they will first need to be added temporarily as a relative of an individual in your tree. We will then detach them from this person, essentially listing them in your tree, but not related to anyone directly. Please follow the steps outlined below.
- Bring up the profile page for and individual. One way this can be done is by mousing over the individual on the Pedigree View and clicking on View profile.

- As we are going to detach this person immediately after attaching them, it won’t matter who we select in this first step
- From the Profile page, click on the Edit this person button, located just below their name at the top.

- On the next screen click on the Relationships tab to display the individual's current relationships.

- The Relationships for this person should now be showing. Using the gender appropriate link, please click on either Add (an alternate) Father or Add (an alternate) Mother.

- Enter the name and information for the new person and click Save.

- You should now see the Relationships screen again, with this new person listed as Father or Mother of this individual. Following their name to the right, you should see a Remove link. Please click on it.

- A window will open stating this individual will be removed as the Father/Mother of this person without deleting them from the tree. Click OK.

- Confirm this individual is no longer listed on the Relationships screen.
- The new person is now listed as an unrelated individual in your tree. You can access their profile from the List of all people, found by clicking the List of all people button from the drop down menu in the upper right.
